Jigawa to construct 10 mini dams to combat flooding, boost agriculture

The Jigawa State government is to construct ten small dams across the state, aimed at bolstering dry-season farming and enhancing the livelihoods of its citizens.
This announcement was made by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Flood Control and Climate Change, Hamza Hadejia, during a live radio interactive session with journalists at the Jigawa State Broadcasting House in Dutse on Friday.
Hadejia’s statement comes on the heels of President Bola Tinubu’s directive to conduct a nationwide review of existing dams to evaluate their condition and identify necessary repairs and upgrades—an initiative designed to strengthen the agricultural sector and mitigate flood risks.
The Special Adviser explained that the primary purpose of the small dam project is not only to prevent flooding but also to control the overflow of rivers into agricultural lands, particularly in riverine communities.
“We are focused on building these small dams in areas where rivers flow through, to prevent floods and protect farmlands from river overflow,” Hadejia stated.
“The construction of these small dams will significantly promote dry-season farming and contribute to the overall economic improvement of our people,” he emphasized.
Hadejia further praised the state government’s proactive approach in addressing the challenges faced by farmers, noting that the initiative is poised to strengthen the state’s agricultural resilience and contribute to long-term economic growth.
