Prof Egbewole advances forest conservation through research

By Abbas Nazil

Professor Zaccheaus Tunde Egbewole, a forestry scholar at Nasarawa State University, Keffi, has distinguished himself through research and academic contributions aimed at improving forest management, promoting sustainable utilisation of forest resources and addressing environmental challenges in Nigeria.

Egbewole, a Professor of Forest Products Development, Utilisation and Environmental Management, has focused much of his work on forest conservation, agroforestry, tree establishment, forest inventory, carbon sequestration and the sustainable use of wood resources.

His research addresses some of the pressures facing Nigeria’s forests, including indiscriminate charcoal production, illegal tree felling, forest degradation and inefficient utilisation of timber resources.

In a 2019 publication, Egbewole and his collaborators examined the use of forest inventory to estimate illegally felled teak trees in Agudu Forest Reserve, Lafia, Nasarawa State, highlighting the importance of scientific monitoring in detecting forest exploitation and supporting better forest management.

He also contributed to research examining the effects of indiscriminate charcoal production on Nigeria’s forest estate, drawing attention to the environmental consequences of unsustainable dependence on forest resources for energy.

His work on the production and utilisation of wood residues for briquettes offers another pathway towards reducing waste and developing alternative energy sources from materials that might otherwise be discarded.

Egbewole has equally contributed to agroforestry research, including studies on the growth and yield of Gmelina arborea cultivated alongside agricultural crops and surveys of agroforestry practices among farmers in Nasarawa State.

These areas of research are important to efforts to integrate trees into agricultural landscapes, improve the productive use of land and strengthen the relationship between rural livelihoods and forest resources.

His research also covers the germination, early growth and establishment of indigenous and economically important tree species, including African mahogany, Anogeissus leiocarpus and African rosewood.

Such studies provide useful scientific knowledge for tree propagation, plantation establishment and the restoration of tree resources, although the extent of their direct application in large-scale restoration programmes is not specified in his curriculum vitae.

Another important area of his environmental work is carbon stock assessment and sequestration, alongside the economic evaluation of forest plantations and their potential for carbon trading.

His stated research interests include assessing the environmental impacts of wood-based industries, managing forest-related environmental disasters and strengthening environmental advocacy.

Beyond his publications, Egbewole has supervised undergraduate and postgraduate research on forest inventory, illegal logging, tree growth, plant diversity, natural regeneration and carbon sequestration. He is also a member of the Forestry Association of Nigeria and the Nigeria Conservation Foundation, professional affiliations that connect his career with the broader forestry and conservation community.

NatureNews observes that Egbewole’s work demonstrates the importance of scientific research in confronting environmental problems that threaten Nigeria’s natural resources.

The country needs stronger forest monitoring systems, practical alternatives to destructive wood harvesting, wider adoption of agroforestry and reliable information on the carbon-storage potential of its forests.

Researchers such as Egbewole can contribute to these priorities by producing evidence that informs policy, guides sustainable resource management and supports the training of future forestry professionals.

However, the value of environmental research ultimately depends on its translation into practical action. Findings on illegal logging, charcoal production, tree regeneration and carbon sequestration must inform decisions by governments, forest managers, industries and local communities if they are to produce measurable conservation benefits.

NatureNews considers Egbewole’s research and teaching contributions a worthy focus for its Eco-Personality of the Week, particularly for their relevance to forest sustainability, responsible resource utilisation and the development of scientific capacity in Nigeria.

His professional record reinforces a crucial message: protecting forests requires more than planting trees; it also demands sound research, responsible harvesting, effective monitoring and sustained commitment to the long-term management of the natural environment.
