The Nigerian Association of Manitoba Inc. (NAMI) marked another historic milestone in its 40-year journey as the organization was formally recognized at the Manitoba Legislative Assemblythrough a Member’s Statement sponsored by the HonourableUzoma Asagwara, Deputy Premier of Manitoba.
The recognition provided a proud and memorable moment for Nigerians across Manitoba, celebrating four decades of NAMI’s service, leadership, community building and contribution to the province.
NAMI President, Mrs. Vera Obehi Keyede, accompanied by members of the NAMI Executives Adelola Abioye (Vice President) and Rita Eghujovbo (Publicity Secretary), was present at the Manitoba Legislature to witness the historic occasion.
The reading of the Member’s Statement was met with a warm reception and a standing ovation, creating a deeply emotional and memorable moment for those in attendance. Hearing NAMI’s name and its four decades of contributions formally acknowledged within the Manitoba Legislature was a powerful reflection of the growth and impact of both the organization and the Nigerian community in Manitoba.
Honouring Those Who Came Before
While the recognition celebrated NAMI’s 40th anniversary, it also served as an opportunity to honour the many individuals whose dedication and service have shaped the organization throughout its history.
From past presidents and executives to volunteers, community leaders, members, partners and supporters, countless individuals have invested their time, energy, resources and passion into building NAMI and strengthening the Nigerian community in Manitoba.
Over four decades, these individuals have served during different periods and faced different challenges. They built relationships, created opportunities, advocated for the community and established foundations upon which NAMI continues to grow today.
Their collective contributions have helped ensure that NAMI remains a strong, enduring and respected voice for Nigerians in Manitoba.
The 40th anniversary recognition is therefore more than a celebration of the present. It is a celebration of the past, the present and the future.
For the current NAMI leadership, the milestone represents both an honour and a responsibility — the responsibility to preserve the legacy entrusted to them while building upon the work of those who came before.
As NAMI moves into its next chapter, the organization remains committed to strengthening community connections, promoting Nigerian culture and identity, supporting its members, empowering young people and creating opportunities for future generations.
The recognition at the Manitoba Legislative Assembly is a reminder that the work of community building matters and that the contributions of generations of Nigerians in Manitoba have made a meaningful impact on the province.
NAMI extends its appreciation to the Honourable UzomaAsagwara for sponsoring the Member’s Statement and to the Manitoba Legislative Assembly for recognizing this important milestone in NAMI’s history.
As the association reflects on four decades of achievement, it also looks forward with renewed purpose and optimism.
Forty years of service.
Forty years of community.
Forty years of legacy.
NAMI stands on the shoulders of those who came before and carries the torch forward for generations to come.
Happy 40th Anniversary, NAMI!
