Mr Muazu Usman, Director of Environment, Kaduna State Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, said it was worrisome that people still feigned ignorance of the hazards of climate change on the environment.
Usman spoke on Tuesday in Kaduna during a sensitization workshop for students, Civil Society Organisations and community leaders, organised by Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP).
“Many people are yet to believe or understand what climate change is all about, so, sensitising them will be a step towards ensuring that they operate on climate favourable equipment at home.
“They will also be encouraged to engage in safe climate practices,” he said.
He explained that one of the mandates of NEWMAP project, was how to handle and manage the environment for sustainable development.
Also speaking at the occasion, Coordinator of NEWMAP in Kaduna, Mr Jibril Dahiru, said it had become imperative to check the menace of erosion as well as pollution towards ensuring a safe environment.
He said the sensitisation was aimed at educating the stakeholders on the negative effects of the hazards, with a view to bringing about, a balanced ecosystem in communities.
In their separate remarks, participants at the workshop promised to engage in favourable environmental practices as part of their contribution towards ensuring a safer environment.
