CAMIC profers solution to erosion in suburban areas across Africa

By Obiabin Onukwugha
Climate Africa Media Initiative Center (CAMIC) has suggested ways in which African countries can employ to solve erosion problems.
This initiative is part of CAMIC’s broader commitment to environmental sustainability and resilience in the face of climate change.
The body said, rrosion, particularly in suburban regions, has become a significant environmental concern.
This is contained in a statement by the body issued in Abuja on Thursday.
CAMIC emphasized the importance of planting trees and vegetation in erosion-prone areas, sustainable land use practices, construction of terraces, cover crops and mulching techniques, community engagement and education, and as well, implementation of erosion control structures, in addressing the menace.
It said: “Trees act as natural barriers, reducing the impact of rainwater and wind on the soil. Reforestation efforts, particularly in degraded areas, can significantly reduce the risk of erosion while enhancing biodiversity and improving air quality.
“CAMIC believes that the fight against erosion requires collaborative efforts from all sectors of society. We call on governments, non-governmental organizations, community leaders, and residents to join hands in implementing these erosion control methods. Together, we can safeguard our environment, protect our communities, and ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.”
CAMIC in the statement signed by its Chief Growth Officer, Pius Alabi, said soil erosion not only leads to the degradation of fertile land but also threatens infrastructure, reduces agricultural productivity, and contributes to the loss of biodiversity. “With the increasing urbanization and climate-related challenges, it is crucial to implement effective strategies to mitigate erosion and protect vulnerable communities,” the statement added.
Climate Africa Media Initiative Centre (CAMIC) is a non-governmental organization dedicated to advancing environmental sustainability and combating climate change. Through research, advocacy, and collaborative initiatives, CAMIC seeks to contribute to a more sustainable and resilient planet for current and future generations.
