A new documentary series, Turning Disability Into Productivity, is spotlighting the creativity, resilience, and entrepreneurial spirit of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Lagos, challenging stereotypes while providing direct financial support to disabled entrepreneurs and artists.
The initiative, led by Success Ezeani through the R4C Ability Project, features nine disabled creators who tell their own stories, demonstrate their skills, and showcase their businesses, shifting public attention from disability to talent, innovation, and economic contribution.
With more than 35 million Nigerians living with disabilities and an estimated 2.1 million to 3 million residing in Lagos State, many continue to experience barriers such as discrimination, poverty, inaccessible infrastructure, and limited employment opportunities despite existing legal protections through the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA).
The documentary series was conceived to address these challenges by giving disabled entrepreneurs and artists an opportunity to present their work from their own perspective. Pre-production began in 2025 with extensive planning, outreach, and logistics before filming commenced across different parts of Lagos in 2026.
Each featured participant explains their creative process, demonstrates their craft, and discusses how they built sustainable businesses despite the challenges associated with disability.
To further strengthen their enterprises, every participant received a creative production grant of ₦200,000, bringing the total financial support distributed under the project to ₦1.8 million.
Rather than focusing on hardship or portraying disability through sympathy, the documentary highlights entrepreneurship, craftsmanship, pricing strategies, customer relationships, and professional expertise.
The storytelling approach emphasizes productivity, independence, and economic inclusion, presenting disability as a condition that does not diminish creativity or business potential.
The first episode, titled Baking Hope Into Every Bite, follows visually impaired entrepreneur Chidimma Ebere, who operates a homemade snacks business producing chin-chin and peanut cakes.
Her story celebrates determination, discipline, and resilience, reinforcing the message that talent can overcome difficult circumstances.
The second episode, Weaving Resilience Through Adire, profiles Rosenje Adeniyi Afis, another visually impaired entrepreneur whose tie-and-dye textile business has grown into a thriving enterprise.
His journey demonstrates that disability does not prevent individuals from building successful careers.
Another episode features Chinedu Joseph Alozie, whose story focuses on overcoming obstacles and transforming challenges into opportunities.
Through his experience, he argues that disability should never define an individual’s potential or capacity to make meaningful contributions to society.
The fourth episode highlights Michael Moses, a visually impaired shoemaker who continued his footwear business after losing his sight.
His determination to maintain his livelihood through quality craftsmanship illustrates the documentary’s central message that disability is not a barrier to entrepreneurship.
Several organisations partnered with the initiative to support its vision of promoting economic inclusion through creativity.
Chief Executive Officer of OAPay, Tracy Abiola, said the company’s collaboration reflects its commitment to empowering communities beyond financial services.
According to her, the remittance platform seeks to strengthen African communities through technology while supporting projects that promote dignity and sustainable livelihoods for people living with disabilities.
Steve Onu, Chief Executive Officer of Yaw Naija Entertainment, described Ezeani as an innovative creative collaborator whose work consistently promotes disability inclusion through documentaries, exhibitions, and cultural projects.
He noted that the initiative creates opportunities that help move marginalized individuals toward economic independence.
Paul Orajiaka, Chief Executive Officer of Auldon Toys Ltd., also praised the collaboration, saying it successfully combines commercial product design with inclusive cultural production.
He added that artisans living with disabilities contributed to textile fabrication, pattern design, and bespoke clothing production showcased in the documentary.
Senior Pastor of Olivet Bible Church, Owen Nlekwuwa, said the church had supported several R4C Ability exhibitions where products created by people with disabilities were displayed publicly, describing Ezeani’s leadership as instrumental in expanding visibility and economic opportunities for disabled creators.
Managing Director of A.Y Shoes Global, Aloy Nwajide, also reaffirmed his support for the project, saying partnerships such as this demonstrate a collective commitment to empowering persons with disabilities through entrepreneurship, creativity, and equal opportunities.
Beyond the featured entrepreneurs, the documentary also introduces other creators including performance artist and dancer Crazy Legs, make-up artist Kelechi Ruth Uhegwu, creative entrepreneur Ugochukwu Ogugua Godfrey, beaded handbag artisan Olatunji Babatunde, creative practitioner Daniel Brown Moses, alongside other talented professionals working across Lagos.
Although the documentary has been praised for allowing participants to control their own narratives and avoid stereotypical portrayals, observers note that the short duration of individual episodes limits opportunities to explore broader issues such as market challenges, policy implementation, and business development.
Nonetheless, Turning Disability Into Productivity has been recognised as an important platform for raising awareness, celebrating the achievements of persons with disabilities, and encouraging greater social and economic inclusion across Nigeria.
