When the Mountains Move: What Nepal’s Catastrophic Flood Teaches Africa About Living with a Changing Climate

There are floods that announce themselves.

The rain begins. The clouds gather. Rivers slowly rise. Weather agencies issue warnings. Communities watch the skies and, if the warnings are taken seriously, people move to safer ground before the water arrives.

Then there are disasters that seem to come from nowhere.

On August 26, 2026, communities in Nepal experienced one of those terrifying moments when the landscape itself appeared to turn against them. A catastrophic flood swept through parts of the Himalayan region after the collapse of a glacier-rock system near the Nepal-Tibet border. In a matter of minutes, enormous quantities of water, mud and debris moved downstream, destroying homes, roads, bridges and infrastructure and leaving a trail of death and destruction.

By September 3, reports put the number of deaths at more than 1,200, with thousands still missing. Entire communities have been buried beneath mud and debris, while hundreds of people connected to hydropower projects remain missing. Reuters reported that some areas of the Trishuli River valley were leftwith almost nothing standing.

For those who survived, the experience was not simply a flood. It was a reminder of how quickly a hazard can transform into a catastrophe when nature, climate, infrastructure and human vulnerability collide.

And that is precisely why Nigeria and the rest of Africa should pay attention.

At first glance, Nepal may appear too different from Africa to offer meaningful lessons. Nepal is a mountainous country dominated by the Himalayas, while much of Africa is characterised by plains, plateaus, tropical forests, savannahs and extensive river systems. The immediate hazard that devastated Nepal was associated with a high-altitude glacier-rock collapse, something that may seem far removed from the flooding experienced in Lagos, Kogi, Benue, Anambra, Bayelsa or other parts of Nigeria.

But climate risk does not require identical geography to produce similar consequences.

The important lesson from Nepal is not that Nigeria should prepare for the same glacier collapse. It is that the hazards we understand today may not be the hazards we will face tomorrow, and our disaster management systems must be prepared for that uncertainty.

For decades, flood management has often been built around relatively familiar patterns. Rainfall is monitored. River levels are measured. Flood-prone areas are mapped. Forecasts are produced and warnings issued. These remain essential. But the Nepal disaster demonstrates the danger of designing warning systems around only the hazards we already know how to monitor.

Recent scientific analysis has suggested that satellite observations showed acceleration in the movement of the glacier-rock system before its collapse. Yet detecting such a signal is very different from being able to translate it into a timely evacuation order. Researchers have pointed out that existing systems are generally better designed to monitor phenomena such as rainfall, river levels and glacial lake outburst floods than sudden failures of unstable glacier-rock systems.

That distinction is important.

A warning system is only as effective as the hazards it can detect.

And detection is only one part of the equation.

A warning must reach the right people, through channels they understand, early enough for them to act. The people receiving it must trust the message. Authorities must have evacuation plans. Safe locations must exist. Roads must remain accessible. Emergency responders must know where to go. Hospitals must be prepared. Communication networks must continue functioning.

In other words, early warning without early action is simply information.

This is an important consideration for Nigeria.

Nigeria has already experienced the devastating consequences of flooding. In recent years, floods have destroyed homes, disrupted transportation, damaged agricultural land, displaced communities and caused significant economic losses. Yet the country is not short of warnings.

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency and the National Emergency Management Agency routinely provide information about flood risks. NEMA has repeatedly urged communities in flood-prone areas to take warnings seriously, relocate when necessary, avoid walking or driving through floodwaters and stop dumping refuse into drainage channels.

The challenge, therefore, is increasingly becoming one of converting information into action.

Nigeria has recognised this. In August, NEMA activated its National Emergency Operations Centre to strengthen the collection, processing and coordination of information relating to the 2026 flood situation. The agency emphasised the importance of timely and reliable information for decision-making, preparedness and response.

There has also been increased emphasis on inter-agency collaboration. NEMA brought together agencies including NiMet, NIHSA, NASRDA and the Nigerian Communications Commission as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s implementation of the Early Warnings for All initiative.

These are important steps. But Nepal presents an opportunity to ask a more difficult question: Are we monitoring enough?

Climate change is altering the risk landscape.

It is not simply making old hazards worse. In some circumstances, it can create new combinations of hazards or change the timing, location and intensity of familiar ones. Extreme rainfall can trigger landslides. Landslides can block rivers. Blocked rivers can create temporary lakes that later burst. Flooding can damage industrial facilities, power infrastructure and transportation networks simultaneously.

A single event can therefore become a cascading disaster.

This is particularly relevant to Africa because the continent is undergoing rapid infrastructure development. Roads, bridges, dams, power plants, telecommunications infrastructure, housing developments and industrial facilities are expanding to support growing populations and economies.

Development is necessary. But infrastructure designed for yesterday’s climate may become increasingly vulnerable to tomorrow’s climate.

Nepal’s experience with hydropower infrastructure is particularly instructive. The catastrophic flooding affected several hydropower facilities, with hundreds of people reportedly trapped or missing in tunnels. Reuters reported that the disaster severely affected infrastructure in the region, while AP reported that damaged or destroyed hydropower facilities represented a significant portion of Nepal’s power capacity.

The question for Africa is straightforward: Are climate risks adequately incorporated into the design, siting, construction and operation of critical infrastructure?

An Environmental Impact Assessment should not simply become a document produced to obtain approval before construction begins. For major infrastructure projects, environmental and social assessment should be a living risk-management process that considers not only the environmental conditions of today but the changing conditions of tomorrow.

What happens if rainfall intensity increases?

What happens if a river changes its behaviour?

What happens if a drainage system is overwhelmed?

What happens if a road becomes the only access route to an isolated community and is washed away?

What happens if a flood cuts electricity to a hospital?

What happens if telecommunications fail at the same time that emergency services need them most?

These are not merely environmental questions. They are business continuity, public safety, national security and economic resilience questions.

This is where technology becomes increasingly important.

Nepal’s tragedy has renewed attention on the potential role of sensors, satellite imagery and real-time monitoring. Recent scientific analysis indicates that satellite observations may have captured changes in the glacier-rock system before its collapse. The lesson is not that technology could have necessarily prevented the disaster; the science itself remains complex and the exact sequence of the collapse is still being studied. Rather, it demonstrates the enormous potential value of combining satellite intelligence, ground sensors, weather information, geological monitoring and predictive analytics.

Africa should be thinking in the same direction.

Artificial intelligence can help analyse enormous volumes of environmental data that humans cannot process quickly enough. Satellite imagery can help identify changes in land cover, river behaviour, erosion and potentially unstable terrain. Sensors can monitor water levels, rainfall, soil conditions and infrastructure integrity. Mobile networks can distribute warnings rapidly.

But technology must not become another acronym-driven project sitting in a government office.

The ultimate test of an early-warning system is not how sophisticated the technology is. It is whether a farmer, trader, student, driver, fisherman or family living in a vulnerable community receives a clear warning and knows exactly what to do.

This is why community engagement remains indispensable.

A warning written in technical language may be useless to a person who does not understand it. A warning sent through an application may not reach someone without internet access. A warning issued only online may fail to reach communities where radio remains the dominant source of information.

Effective disaster preparedness therefore has to meet people where they are.

Radio. Television. SMS. Social media. Religious institutions. Traditional institutions. Community leaders. Schools. Local emergency committees. Sirens. Public address systems.

The message must be repeated, understood and trusted.

There is another lesson from Nepal that Africa must not overlook: disasters do not respect administrative boundaries.

The event occurred in a geographically sensitive transboundary region. Monitoring and responding to hazards that originate across borders requires countries to share information rapidly. Scientific information that remains locked behind political or institutional boundaries can become useless when minutes matter.

Africa has many transboundary rivers and ecosystems. The Niger, Benue, Congo, Nile, Senegal, Volta and other major river systems cross national boundaries or connect multiple countries. Climate-related hazards affecting one country can therefore have consequences for another.

Regional environmental intelligence should consequently become part of Africa’s climate adaptation architecture.

But perhaps the most important lesson from Nepal is psychological.

We must stop thinking about disasters only after they happen.

Too often, preparedness receives attention when floodwaters are already rising, when buildings have collapsed, when roads have been washed away or when communities are already searching for missing relatives.

By then, the cost of intervention has increased dramatically.

Prevention may appear expensive when nothing has happened. After a disaster, however, the cost of rebuilding becomes impossible to ignore.

The choice before Africa is therefore not whether we will spend money on resilience. We will spend it either way. The question is whether we spend it before the disaster, designing resilience into our systems, or afterwards, rebuilding what we failed to protect.

Nepal is still counting its losses. Communities are searching for missing loved ones. Rescue teams are working through enormous quantities of debris. Roads, bridges, homes and critical infrastructure will have to be rebuilt.

But rebuilding should not mean simply replacing what was destroyed.

It must mean building differently.

For Nigeria and Africa, the message should be equally clear. Climate adaptation cannot remain a conference theme. Early warning cannot remain a press release. Environmental assessment cannot remain a compliance document. Disaster management cannot begin when disaster arrives.

We need infrastructure that anticipates changing hazards, environmental intelligence that continuously monitors risk, early-warning systems that reach the last mile, communities that understand what warnings mean, emergency institutions that can act quickly, and governments that treat resilience as an investment rather than an expense.

The mountains may be far away, but the warning is not.

Nepal has shown the world what can happen when a changing climate meets vulnerable landscapes, critical infrastructure and gaps in preparedness. Africa does not need to experience the same catastrophe before learning the lesson.

Sometimes the wisest response to disaster is not to wait for our own tragedy.

It is to learn from somebody else’s.
