A wave of progress is sweeping across rural Nigeria, bringing with it the promise of electricity and enhanced agricultural opportunities.
The Africa Mini-Grids Programme (AMP), spearheaded by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), has launched the deployment of 23 new mini-grids, setting the stage for a transformative impact on underserved communities.
The initiative was formally unveiled at a grant award ceremony in Abuja, showcasing the potential of these mini-grids, with capacities ranging from 30kWp to 200kWp, to revolutionize lives and livelihoods across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
This significant undertaking, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), marks a crucial step in addressing the energy deficit in rural areas.
Since its inception in 2022, the AMP has been working to expand access to sustainable electricity across 21 countries, with Nigeria now poised to reap substantial rewards.
The program is projected to positively influence over 70,000 Nigerians, facilitating over 600 productive use connections – fueling businesses and stimulating economic growth – and more than 375 social connections, bringing light and opportunity to homes and community facilities.
Eighteen renewable energy developers have secured grants totaling $5.91 million to bring this vision to fruition.
The REA has collaborated closely with the GEF, UNDP, the Federal Ministry of Environment, and other key stakeholders in the energy sector to ensure the AMP’s effectiveness.
The program’s scope extends beyond simply providing power; it focuses on bolstering rural agricultural value chains, paving the way for accelerated and sustainable energy access in Nigeria’s most remote regions.
The selection of the 23 pilot sites, chosen from 120 potential locations identified through the Energizing Agriculture Programme, reflects the diverse nature of agriculture across Nigeria.
These sites represent a variety of activities, from grain processing and improving energy efficiency in staple food production to supporting cash crops and establishing essential cold storage facilities to minimize post-harvest losses.
Stanley Jonah, the GEF Operational Focal Person, emphasized the AMP’s potential for transformative change, stressing that the projects will not only revitalize the agricultural sector but also significantly improve the quality of life for rural residents.
Abba Aliyu, Managing Director of the REA, highlighted the alignment between the AMP and the government’s broader strategy of utilizing decentralized renewable energy solutions to drive growth and unlock opportunities within the agricultural sector.
He underscored the vital link between energy access and agricultural productivity, recognizing its power to stimulate economic growth and promote inclusion.
Aliyu further noted that the AMP will empower local businesses, spark innovation, generate employment, and substantially reduce energy poverty nationwide.
The AMP’s innovative structure fosters strong partnerships between public and private stakeholders, demonstrating a shared commitment to sustainable energy development.
With a 48-month implementation timeline, the AMP-funded mini-grids aim to catalyze access to energy-efficient and sustainable infrastructure for small-holder farmers in last-mile communities.
The program’s success is expected to accelerate the financial viability and encourage scaled up commercial investment in mini grids throughout Nigeria, establishing a replicable model for other countries in sub-Saharan Africa.
This initiative is not just about providing power; it’s about empowering communities, boosting agricultural output, and building a brighter future for rural Nigeria.
