Nigeria today joins the global maritime community to commemorate World Maritime Day 2026, with stakeholders meeting to examine how policy commitments can be translated into improved industry performance and tangible economic benefits for the Blue Economy.
This year’s celebration, themed “From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence,” shifts focus from policy formulation to implementation, regulatory effectiveness and innovation across the maritime sector.
The Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola, is expected to declare the event open, while renowned maritime expert, Mrs. Mfon Ekong Usoro, will deliver the keynote presentation titled “From Policy to Practice: Strengthening Nigeria’s Blue Economy.”
The commemoration is being marked globally under the auspices of the International Maritime Organization, IMO, to highlight the importance of shipping safety, maritime security and sustainable management of ocean resources.
In Nigeria, discussions are expected to centre on how the country can better harness its vast maritime resources, spanning shipping, port operations, fisheries and other ocean-related economic activities.
Stakeholders will examine how effective enforcement of existing policies, institutional coordination and collaboration with industry operators can improve performance, enhance working conditions for seafarers and build investor confidence.
Usoro’s keynote is expected to outline practical strategies for strengthening Nigeria’s Blue Economy and unlocking its full maritime potential.
The emphasis on “From Policy to Practice” places implementation at the heart of Nigeria’s maritime development agenda, underscoring that while developing regulatory frameworks is crucial, delivering results requires sustained action that ensures benefits reach beyond government institutions to workers and businesses across the value chain.
The gathering is expected to reinforce calls for stronger regulation, improved industry performance and collaborative action to drive economic growth through the Blue Economy.
