Mexico is encouraging consumers to return unwanted electronic devices for formal recycling as technology companies and retailers seek to reduce the amount of e-waste ending up in conventional waste streams.
The initiative, known as “Recicla en Modo Inteligente”, is being implemented by Intel and Office Depot Mexico in partnership with electronic recycling company PROAMBI, with ASUS among the participating technology companies.
Running from July 15 to August 23, the campaign allows eligible Office Depot Rewards members to return unused laptops, desktop computers, mobile phones, tablets, monitors and video game consoles at participating stores.
Consumers who hand in qualifying devices can receive a MX$1,500, equivalent to about US$88, coupon for the purchase of selected Intel-powered laptops from brands including ASUS, Acer, HP, Lenovo and MSI.
The incentive is intended to make the replacement of ageing electronics part of a formal recycling process rather than leaving discarded equipment to informal or uncontrolled disposal channels.
Once collected, the devices are to be handled by PROAMBI, which will recover usable materials and process the remaining components through formal recycling procedures.
The company said its R2v3 certification supports traceability in the handling of electronic waste and is designed to ensure materials are recovered through environmentally responsible processes.
The initiative also addresses another concern associated with discarded electronics: the personal information stored on old devices.
PROAMBI said it would securely erase data from devices submitted through the programme before or during the recycling process, reducing the risk of personal information being exposed when old equipment changes hands.
The campaign reflects the growing focus on treating discarded electronics as a source of recoverable materials rather than simply as waste.
Electronic devices contain materials that can be recovered and returned to manufacturing systems, potentially reducing the need for virgin raw materials while limiting the environmental impact of disposal.
Intel director of communications for the Americas Ana Peña said responsible management of electronic waste should accompany the rapid pace at which consumers replace technology.
PROAMBI general director Mónica Escandón said formal recycling could maximise material recovery while ensuring that discarded electronics were processed through secure and traceable systems.
The campaign is scheduled to run until August 23, with participating Office Depot stores serving as collection points for consumers seeking to dispose of their unwanted electronic equipment.
