The Federal Government has approved the comprehensive modernisation and upgrade of Eastern ports, including Onne in Rivers State, Warri in Delta State and Calabar in Cross River State.
Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, disclosed this in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Mr. Bolaji Akinola.
The approval comes in addition to the earlier approval for the modernisation of Apapa and Tin Can Island Ports in Lagos.
Dr. Oyetola said the decision underscores the Federal Government’s determination to build a balanced, efficient and competitive national port system and decongest Lagos ports.
He described the approval as part of the administration’s broader strategy to reposition the maritime sector as a major driver of economic growth, trade, investment and employment under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
According to him, upgraded infrastructure and improved operational efficiency at Onne, Warri and Calabar ports will enhance cargo handling, reduce vessel turnaround time, strengthen regional connectivity and make the movement of goods more predictable and cost-effective.
The Minister added that the latest approval complements Federal Government’s approvals for six new deep seaports, including Ibom in Akwa Ibom, Bakassi in Cross River, Agge in Bayelsa, Gateway in Ogun, Ondo in Ondo State and Bonny in Rivers State.
“These ports have strategic roles to play in our trade, industrial and regional development, and we are determined to equip them to meet the demands of a growing economy,” Oyetola said.
He noted that the ultimate aim is to reduce the cost and time of doing business while creating an environment that encourages investment and job creation.
“The Ministry will continue to work closely with state governments, terminal operators, investors, shipping companies and other stakeholders to ensure these projects translate into tangible improvements across Nigeria’s marine and blue economy,” he said.
The Minister stressed that Nigeria has the geography, market and maritime resources to become a leading maritime hub.
He assured that the federal government will provide the infrastructure and enabling environment to turn that potential into sustainable economic value.
