In response to the growing concerns about the impact of chemical pesticides on both human health and the environment, the Climate Africa Media Initiative Center (CAMIC) is advocating for the adoption of sustainable pest management techniques to protect crops from destruction while ensuring food safety.
According to the environmental advocacy body, chemical pesticides often leave residues that can be harmful to human consumption and disrupt ecosystems.
CAMIC is committed to raising awareness about alternative pest control methods that are environmentally friendly, sustainable, and safe for humans.
The body in a statement issued by its Chief Growth Officer, Pius Alabi in Abuja on Thursday noted that by implementing healthy farming techniques such as crop rotation, intercropping, and planting pest-resistant crop varieties, impacts of pests on crops can be reduced.
“Implementing farming techniques such as crop rotation, intercropping, and planting pest-resistant crop varieties. These methods disrupt pest life cycles and reduce their impact on crops.
CAMIC suggested botanical pesticides and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) as some of the effective methods for preventing the impacts of pest on humans and the environment.
CAMIC emphasised its dedication to empowering farmers with knowledge and resources to adopt these sustainable practices.
“Through workshops, training sessions, and information dissemination, we aim to reduce the reliance on harmful pesticides and promote the health of our communities and ecosystems.
“We believe that protecting our crops should not come at the expense of our health or the environment. By adopting sustainable pest management practices, we can ensure a healthier future for our farmers, consumers, and the planet,” the statement read in part.
The statement added that CAMIC will be launching a series of educational programs across various regions, providing farmers with hands-on training in sustainable pest management.
“These initiatives are part of our broader mission to promote environmental stewardship and food security in Africa,” the ststement added.
