Mr John Gabaya, the Chairman of Bwari Area Council of the FCT has urged residents to maintain a proper sanitary environment and stop indiscriminate dumping of refuse.
Speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Bwari, the chairman frowned at the increasing cases of indiscriminate dumping of wastes and refuse by residents on streets.
While discouraging the unpleasant act, he said, the council was working effortlessly to ensure a proper and sustainable means of waste disposal.
“Environmental sanitation is a thing of concern in every society because, cleanliness, they say, is next to godliness.

“One of the primary focuses of this administration is to ensure and maintain a clean environment, but we cannot do it alone, all hands must be on the deck to achieve this and it includes the residents.
“What is not helping is the continuous indiscriminate dumping of refuse on the streets which is a thing of concern. It is unhygienic and gives a negative face to this council,’’ he said.
Gabaya urged the residents to stop this unpleasant act.
“ We have designated locations in which all these wastes and refuse are supposed to be dumped so that the sanitation trucks can locate and evacuate them but it is unfortunate this has been a challenge.
“However, the council is working on best modalities that would enable proper means of wastes disposal and evacuation methods within communities of the district to ensure a clean environment,’’ he assured.
The chairman added that the council would also work out plans to implement compliance to rules that would help address the challenge.
He said that the department of environment in the council, alongside its private partners, have been carrying out evacuation of these refuse within communities and market structures.
However, he said that one of the challenges affecting constant evacuation was availability of funds that would help facilitate the process.
According to him, once the funds expected by the council were available, prompt evacuation of wastes would continue. (NAN)
