The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has signed a cooperation agreement with Ekthar Wildlife Development to strengthen wildlife conservation, biodiversity research and sustainable natural-resource management across the emirate.
The agreement was signed by EAD Acting Executive Director of the Terrestrial and Marine Biodiversity Sector Maitha Al Hameli and Ekthar Chief Executive Officer Frédéric Lacroix during the Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition (ADIHEX) 2026.
The partnership will combine the scientific and technical capabilities of both organisations in areas including species conservation and recovery, reintroduction programmes, conservation breeding, wildlife health, biosecurity, genetics and genomics.
It will also cover biodiversity monitoring, sustainable wildlife management and research linked to culturally significant practices such as falconry.
The organisations will explore joint opportunities in scientific research and innovation aimed at strengthening the long-term protection of Abu Dhabi’s desert and marine ecosystems.
Al Hameli said the partnership would strengthen the scientific basis for managing species and habitats while helping develop national expertise in biodiversity conservation.
Lacroix said Ekthar would contribute its experience in applied conservation science, particularly in conservation breeding, genomics and biosecurity, to support practical and evidence-based conservation measures.
The agreement also provides a framework for knowledge-sharing, capacity building and applied research. Specific joint programmes will be developed and implemented by mutual agreement and in line with the policies of both organisations.
The partnership is expected to contribute to Abu Dhabi’s wider efforts to protect its natural heritage and reinforce its role in regional environmental conservation.
