The Zamfara State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing the recurring flooding in Gusau and surrounding areas, with the state’s Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources unveiling a series of proactive measures.
According to a statement by ministry spokesman, Abubakar Aliyu, the Commissioner in charge of the ministry, Kasimu Sani Kaura, has directed immediate interventions, particularly in flood-prone areas such as behind Usaimin, near the Nigeria Teachers Institute in Gusau.
The Commissioner emphasized that the ministry is determined to meet federal expectations on effective flood management.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Alhaji Rilwanu Musa Zurmi, the Commissioner noted that the state is working closely with stakeholders to develop long-term strategies aimed at minimizing flood risks and enhancing community resilience.
During a briefing, the Director of Flood and Erosion Control, Malam Abubakar Muhammad Nahuce, identified poor drainage maintenance as a major cause of flooding in the area.
He pointed out that blocked waterways restrict the free flow of rainwater, leading to overflows and infrastructure damage.
Nahuce explained that the ministry’s response includes a comprehensive plan involving drainage clearance, public sensitization, and infrastructure improvements to control floodwaters and protect both property and lives.
He said the goal is to create a safer, more sustainable environment for Zamfara residents through coordinated flood mitigation efforts.
