World Bee Day: Farmers urge govt on empowerment, provision of modern equipment

By Bisola Adeyemo

The President of Grassroots Beekeeper Association of Nigeria, Pastor Dagunduro Gideon has called on the government at all levels to assist in training bee farmers with modern technology equipment.

In a chat with NatureNews, last week Saturday ahead of World Bee Day, Pastor Dagunduro said the federal government should also offer financial assistance to farmers to enhance their financial base.

” We also appeal for relevant equipment like Langstroth hives, larger space of land in an environment where there are trees,” he added.

While speaking on major challenges, Dagunduro lamented on environmental challenges that reduce the population of bees.

The main purpose of World Bee Day event is to spread awareness of the significance of bees and other pollinators for our survival.

He said, “Beekeeping is done in an area with trees plantation, forest or flower garden but deforestation, bush burning, vandalism, the activities of herders have been a big challenge on bee habitations.

“We want the government to sensitize people to know more of the importance of bee farming like poultry, piggery and among others.”
