World Food Programme (WFP) official has emphasized India’s growing importance in supporting global food security by sharing its innovative technologies and best agricultural practices with other countries.
Carl Skau, Deputy Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer of WFP, made these remarks during a high-level meeting with Devesh Chaturvedi, Secretary of India’s Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, on Monday.
The meeting, aimed at strengthening collaboration between WFP and India, focused on ongoing and future engagements at the national, regional, and global levels.
Skau praised India’s comprehensive approach to food security, highlighting the country’s robust social protection systems, successful food diversification and fortification programs, efforts to economically empower women, and the promotion of climate-resilient livelihoods.
“These experiences and models hold significant potential for helping other nations improve their food security,” Skau said. “India’s knowledge, technologies, and best practices can be shared and adapted to different contexts, enabling more countries to address the challenges they face in feeding their populations sustainably.”
Skau also drew attention to the mounting global food security challenges driven by escalating conflicts and the adverse effects of climate change, stressing that no single country can tackle these issues alone.
He commended India’s role as a key player in the global effort to develop resilient and inclusive food systems.
During the discussion, Chaturvedi updated the WFP official on recent innovations in India’s agricultural sector.
He highlighted advances in crop insurance schemes that provide farmers with better risk management, the rise of digital agriculture technologies improving productivity and transparency, and enhanced traceability systems to ensure food safety and quality from farm to market.
The exchange underscored India’s commitment to modernizing its agricultural practices and supporting smallholder farmers while contributing to broader efforts to achieve food security and nutrition goals.
The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to deepen partnership and collaboration, recognizing the importance of leveraging India’s expertise in the global fight against hunger and malnutrition.
Both parties affirmed that continued cooperation would be critical to building sustainable food systems capable of withstanding future challenges.
This engagement reinforces WFP’s dedication to working closely with key partners like India to accelerate progress toward ending hunger worldwide and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
