Rooted in Passion: Babantude’s vision for sustainable gardening
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

By Abdullahi Lukman

Babantude, a horticulturist who hailed from Kogi State, embarked on his journey into the gardening business, driven by a desire to create something both rewarding and fulfilling.

From the outset, he recognized the importance of gaining knowledge and skills, whether through formal education or hands-on experience.

His early steps in horticulture focused on identifying his niche, honing in on the areas of landscaping and garden design that most appealed to him.

This was followed by creating a detailed business plan and building strong networks within the local horticulture community.

Babantude’s journey was shaped by research—understanding local market trends, competition, and regulatory requirements was vital to his success.

The principles he followed have been foundational in his growth, and he encourages others to start small and expand gradually as they gain experience.

His interest in gardening, like many others, has deep roots in childhood experiences.

Babantude recalls helping his parents in the garden as a young boy, where he developed a deep appreciation for the beauty and functionality of plants.

This early connection to nature sparked his desire to pursue a career in horticulture.

The aesthetics of plants, their colors and textures, continue to inspire his work today, as does the sense of personal achievement that comes from nurturing plants to full growth.

When choosing plants to specialize in, Babantude considers factors such as climate, market demand, and resources.

His experience has taught him the importance of selecting plants that not only thrive in the local environment but also meet market needs.

In turn, his philosophy of horticulture revolves around sustainability and a deep respect for nature.

He believes that every plant deserves careful attention and the right conditions to flourish, which is why he always strives for a balanced, eco-conscious approach in his projects.

Starting a new garden or project requires careful planning. Babantude begins by assessing the site—considering sunlight, drainage, and topography—before clearing the space and selecting plants that are suited to the environment.

This meticulous planning ensures the garden has the best chance for success, with maintenance plans in place to handle watering, pruning, and pest control.

Over the years, Babantude has faced challenges that tested his resilience. Unpredictable weather patterns and pests have posed frequent obstacles, yet he’s learned to adapt and develop strategies for overcoming these hurdles.

When it comes to pest control, he relies on a mix of prevention and natural remedies, using physical barriers, organic solutions like neem oil, and maintaining a clean garden environment.

He has also learned to monitor weather conditions closely and adjust watering schedules accordingly to protect his plants from the effects of extreme weather.

Sustainability plays a significant role in Babantude’s approach to gardening.

He embraces rainwater harvesting, composting, and organic gardening practices to reduce environmental impact.

He also advocates for the use of water-efficient irrigation systems, such as drip irrigation, and creates wildlife-friendly spaces that encourage biodiversity.

These practices not only benefit the environment but also help create gardens that are resilient and self-sustaining.

As a mentor to beginners, Babantude advises new gardeners to start small and learn the basics before taking on larger projects.

He encourages them to choose easy-to-grow plants and to always ask for help from more experienced gardeners.

According to him, patience is key, as gardening is a learning process that takes time to master.

For those just starting, he recommends plants like succulents and microgreens—easy to grow and requiring minimal maintenance.

Babantude also warns against common mistakes like overwatering, poor soil preparation, and insufficient sunlight, all of which can undermine the success of a garden.

With time and experience, beginners can avoid these pitfalls and develop a thriving, healthy garden.

Looking to the future, Babantude is excited about the role technology is playing in horticulture.

Innovations such as robotic gardening systems and AI-driven growth analysis are revolutionizing the industry, enabling more efficient and sustainable practices.

He believes that these advancements, coupled with sustainable farming techniques, will help address the challenges posed by climate change and population growth.

One of Babantude’s most memorable experiences as a horticulturist was working on a large-scale landscaping project that involved creating a sustainable landscape for an estate nestled within a delicate ecosystem.

The project was a perfect blend of aesthetic design and environmental responsibility, and seeing it come to life remains one of his proudest accomplishments.

The most rewarding aspect of working with plants, according to Babantude, is watching them grow and thrive.

There’s immense satisfaction in nurturing a plant from seed to bloom, but it’s also incredibly fulfilling to see the positive impact gardening can have on people’s lives.

Whether it’s helping someone with mental health issues find peace through gardening or creating a beautiful, tranquil space, the rewards of working with nature are profound.

For Babantude, staying motivated year after year comes from the passion he feels for his work.

Quotes from famous horticulturists and stories of sustainable projects like the Greenbelt Movement or the High Line in New York City inspire him to continue pushing forward and making a positive impact in his community and the environment.

He firmly believes that gardening is not just about plants; it’s about fostering growth in both nature and ourselves.
