Some residents of Abuja have lamented the sudden increase in the price of fruits and most especially plantain.
A market survey conducted by NatureNews recently at some markets in Abuja revealed that there is 300% increase in the cost of some fruits.
A seed of roasted plantain which is often sold at N100 is now sold at N300.
A resident who spoke with NatureNews, Esther Odinaka, said the sudden increase in the price of fruits is unfortunate.
“Considering the rising price of all commodities, Nigerians are facing tough time already, and now, plantain price has gone up in such a way that an ordinary Nigerian can not afford it. This is unfortunate.” Odinaka said.
Another resident Salihu Abdulkabir, expressed his dissatisfaction over the ill-turnover in the price of plantain. He lamented that the Association who oversee the trade of fruits must sit-up and ensure that the price is regulated.
Meanwhile, efforts by NatureNews to speak to the Chairman of Fruits Association, Zuba, Abuja were abortive.
However, a brief chat with the Public Relations Officer of the Association, Aliyu Alade, revealed the causes of the sudden hike.
According to Alade, bush burning was one of the cause in the hike of fruits as some farmers lost most of their plantation, thereby creating shortage in the supply of fruits.
The PRO said that the major cause of the hike is the issue of insecurity posed by herdsmen to farmers.
“Some farmers got kidnapped or were killed in their respective farms and this has created fear for others who don’t want to lose their lives.
“Other farmers who are courageous enough, still manage to go the forest to get the fruits, thereby reducing the quantity of market products.” Alade said.
He said that the cost of transportation also contributes to the hike in the cost of fruits.
“There is increase in transportation fare. Drivers often complain of high cost of motor spare parts, and sometimes fuel. All these contribute to the hike in the price.”
The PRO called on Federal and state governments to put more effort in curbing the issue of insecurity in all parts of the country so that farmers could return back to their farms with a peaceful mind and ensure the safety of lives of the farmers.
He assured that if government can intensify security measures on insecurity, farmers will be ready to produce more for Nigerians.
