Regenerative farming cuts 946,000 tonnes of CO₂e in ADM programmes

By Faridat Salifu

Regenerative agriculture programmes involving more than 56,000 farmers helped reduce an estimated 946,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) emissions in 2025, according to global agribusiness company ADM.

The programmes covered about 4.6 million acres (1.86 million hectares) across 11 countries and involved 10 crops, including canola, soybeans and sunflowers, according to ADM’s 2026 Regenerative Agriculture Report published on September 15, 2026.

The reported emissions reduction was measured against regional agricultural benchmarks.

ADM said the programmes are designed to improve soil health while helping farmers respond to changing weather conditions and maintain agricultural productivity.

Greg Morris, ADM’s senior vice president and president of Ag Services and Oilseeds, said healthier soils could improve farmers’ ability to adapt to changing conditions and strengthen resilience across agricultural value chains.

Among the practices promoted through the programmes are conservation tillage and cover cropping, which can help improve soil structure and water retention while reducing reliance on synthetic agricultural inputs.

Farmers participating in some programmes also receive financial incentives linked to the regenerative practices they adopt, including measures aimed at increasing carbon sequestration.

In Poland, ADM has partnered with food and beverage company PepsiCo and food manufacturer Mars to support 24 rapeseed and wheat farmers managing about 5,454 hectares.

Under the partnership, farmers are adopting regenerative practices across their crop rotations, with sustainably produced rapeseed intended for PepsiCo’s Lay’s and Doritos brands and regenerative wheat supporting Mars pet-care brands including Whiskas and Pedigree.

The programme provides farmers with technical expertise, training and guidance from specialists, while data is collected to measure the environmental impact of the farming practices.

The Cool Farm Tool, a sustainability calculator used to assess and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from farms, is being used to support impact measurement.

ADM said the data generated through the Polish initiative could help inform the expansion of regenerative agriculture practices into other markets.

The company is also working with German chemical company Bayer on a separate regenerative agriculture initiative in Poland.

The growing focus on regenerative agriculture reflects efforts to reduce emissions from food production while addressing challenges faced by farmers, including declining soil health, water stress and climate-related risks.

For farmers, practices such as conservation tillage and cover cropping can potentially deliver both environmental and production benefits by protecting soils, improving water retention and supporting longer-term farm resilience.
