The Centre for Earth Works, a non-governmental organisation, says it has engaged 800 school children on enlightenment project.
It says the programme — “Project nature in schools” is to enlighten young people on approaches toward addressing climate change.
The Team Lead of the organisation, Mr Benson Dotun, announced this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Jos.
He said that the project, also known as green schools, had engaged school children in Jos East, Jos South and Jos North local government areas on its advocacy campaigns on sustaining the environmental.
“ The idea is to form green schools, have young people enlightened on how the natural world works and their roles in trying to address the manmade problems we face in our environment.
“This includes the issues of climate changes, waste and renewable energy such as solar,” he said.
He described young people as the future of the society who are critical in preserving the environment through engaging in tree planting, advocacy on environmental issues and proper disposal of trash, recyclables and hazardous household waste among others.
He said that the organisation had also trained 20 scavengers in Jos North Local Government Area to build their capacity on identifying waste and the need for proper separation.
He noted that the organisation had also conducted training on eco literacy for scavengers in the local government.
