The Oyo State Government has trained 250 retirees and intending retirees in agricultural practices and micro-livestock management as part of efforts to enhance food security and promote sustainable livelihoods post-retirement.
The training, held at the Local Government Hall, Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan, aimed to equip participants with practical skills in areas such as crop cultivation, aquaculture, poultry, snail farming, and backyard gardening.
Speaking at the event, the Head of Service, Mrs. Olubunmi Oni, said agriculture remains a key pillar of Nigeria’s economy and a viable alternative income source for retirees.
“Oyo State has vast arable land and a favourable climate. With consistent effort and support, small-scale farming can grow into successful enterprises,” she said, encouraging participants to take advantage of the opportunities in agriculture.
Also speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Barr. Olasunkanmi Olaleye, outlined the government’s broader agricultural initiatives under Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration.
These include the recruitment of 161 agricultural officers, a 50 percent subsidy on tractor services, distribution of inputs, and provision of motorcycles for extension officers to enhance outreach.
Olaleye noted that the training aligns with the state’s strategy to engage retirees in food production and ensure they remain economically active.
He assured that farming inputs would be made available to interested participants.
In her welcome remarks, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mrs. Abosede Owoeye, said the initiative supports economic diversification and sustainability.
She emphasized that retirees would be introduced to viable, low-risk ventures like the “Every Home a Garden” programme and micro-livestock farming involving rabbits, snails, and broiler chickens.
