Ogun introduces farmer database to accelerate food security drive
By Abdullahi Lukman
Ogun State has introduced a digital Farmers’ Information Management System (FIMS) to track and support farmers across the state.
The State governor,Dapo Abiodun, made the announcement at the launch of the N500 billion Produce for Lagos Offtake Guarantee Fund, held at Lagos House, Ikeja.
At the event, Governor Abiodun signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formalize Ogun State’s participation in the initiative.
The FIMS platform, according to the governor, currently has about 160,000 registered farmers, allowing the government to access real-time data on farm locations, crop types, and farm sizes.
Abiodun noted that the system has enabled the state to distribute agricultural inputs more efficiently, contributing to Ogun’s low food inflation rate.
He joined Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Niger State Governor Mohammed Bago, Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas, and Kogi State Governor Ahmed Ododo in a panel session to discuss how their states will support the Lagos-led programme to enhance national food production.
Abiodun called on the Federal Government to adopt a similar model by creating a sovereign food guarantee fund, suggesting a potential N1 trillion investment to support agricultural growth nationwide.
He praised Lagos State’s proactive approach and aligned the initiative with President Bola Tinubu’s agricultural agenda, which targets large-scale cultivation and mechanisation.
The governor affirmed Ogun’s readiness to access and deploy such funding, pointing to the scientific and organized nature of the state’s agricultural sector.
