Nigerians pick reusable bags as easiest eco-habit, NatureNews poll
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

By Abbas Nazil

A recent social media poll conducted by NatureNews Africa has revealed that using reusable bags is considered the easiest eco-friendly habit to adopt immediately, according to a significant portion of respondents across the continent.

The survey, which was run across the organization’s social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly known as Twitter), and LinkedIn, gathered responses from hundreds of environmentally conscious individuals who were asked to choose the simplest sustainable habit they could start right away.

Of the four options provided in the poll, 34.4 percent of participants selected “using reusable bags” as the most accessible and practical action to help the environment.

This option led the poll with the highest percentage, indicating a growing public awareness around the environmental impact of single-use plastic bags and the increasing availability and affordability of alternatives like cloth or jute bags.

Coming in second place was “planting trees,” which was selected by 26.2 percent of respondents.

Despite being a habit that often requires more time, space, and resources compared to the other options, planting trees remains a popular eco-conscious activity.

Its strong showing in the poll suggests that many individuals are motivated by its long-term environmental benefits, such as carbon sequestration, shade provision, and erosion control.

The third most selected eco-habit was “using public transport,” garnering 21.3 percent of the vote.

This reflects the growing willingness of individuals to reduce their carbon footprint by avoiding private car usage.

However, this option may also depend heavily on the availability and reliability of public transport systems in various regions, which may have affected its ranking.

Meanwhile, “refilling water bottles” came in fourth place with 18.0 percent.

Though it is a highly effective way to cut down on plastic waste from single-use bottles, it appears that this habit has not yet gained as much traction as the others, potentially due to a lack of access to clean refill stations in some areas.

The poll reflects a snapshot of current environmental attitudes among social media users and provides insight into which sustainable habits are more likely to be adopted quickly if promoted effectively.

NatureNews Africa’s initiative aims to engage the public in conversations around practical climate action, promoting daily choices that can collectively lead to significant environmental improvement.

The results of the poll underline the importance of convenience, accessibility, and public awareness in driving behavior change toward more sustainable living.

By highlighting simple, everyday actions such as using reusable bags or planting trees, the platform hopes to encourage more individuals to commit to habits that protect the planet and support a greener future.
