In a bid to fight crimes in the Gulf of Guinea, the Nigerian Government has received three warships from the Chinese government.
The warships arrived in Lagos with nearly a battalion of soldiers, accompanied by the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, who stated that the visit aimed to improve diplomatic relations between Nigeria and China.
According to reports, China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) naval fleet, led by the destroyer Nanning, made a rare visit to Nigeria on Sunday, marking the Chinese military’s presence on Africa’s Atlantic coast.
Rear Admiral Joseph Akpan, the Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, expressed appreciation for the ships’ visit, emphasizing their diplomatic significance for the Nigerian Navy.
“This visit is particularly important for the Nigerian Navy and the Chinese Navy, as well as the military. It will aid us in combating crimes, particularly in the Gulf of Guinea. Our personnel will have the opportunity to interact, engage in sporting activities, exchange mementos and gifts. We will also discuss future collaborations between our navies and explore mutual benefits,” said Akpan.
During the reception of the vessels, the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Cui Jianchun, highlighted the deepening relationship between the two countries and the ongoing efforts to strengthen military ties.
Jianchun stated that the visit of the warships symbolized the harmonious relationship between Nigeria and China, emphasizing their joint commitment to promoting peace within the sub-region.
“The purpose of this visit is to further deepen the relationship between our two countries and enhance our cooperation. It exemplifies the harmony and synergy between Nigeria and China,” Jianchun said.
The ambassador assured that China and Nigeria would continue working together to foster peace and harmony, while actively seeking avenues to contribute to the international community.
