The Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) has donated solar refrigerators to small-scale fish vendors in Oyorokoto, a fishing community in Rivers State, to support environmental protection and sustainable fish preservation.
The donation was made on Wednesday to leaders of four local units in the Andoni local government area.
Mrs. Stella Egbe and Mr. Shittu Usman, representing NCF, explained that the initiative is part of the “Creating A Resilient East Atlantic Flyway” project, aimed at conserving wetlands, empowering local communities, and protecting migratory birds.
The solar fridges will help fishermen and women preserve unsold fish, reducing waste and environmental degradation.
Egbe said the project is supported by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment and the International Climate Initiative. Chief Rokeek Ngo, who received the fridges on behalf of the community, urged responsible use and protection of the donated equipment.
Conservationist Mr. Gogo Ujile praised NCF’s efforts, highlighting Andoni Island’s rich biodiversity and past NCF projects in the area, including mangrove planting, training programs, and the establishment of conservation clubs in schools.
He pledged to continue advocating for ecosystem preservation.
