NCCC calls for commitment to low emission, climate resilient future

By Faridat Salifu

The National Council on Climate Change (NCCC) Director General, Dr. Salisu Dahiru, has called on stakeholders to provide their knowledge and support concrete initiatives in order to help Nigeria move closer to becoming a low-emission and climate-resilient nation.

He made this statement during the recent public presentation and high-level workshop of the Long-term Low-emission Development Strategy (LT-LEDS) in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria.

With its concrete programs and policies focused at accelerating the adoption of climate-resilient measures and technologies, the LT-LEDS acts as a roadmap for Nigeria’s transition to its Net-zero Pathway by 2060.

Dr. Dahiru emphasized the importance of mobilizing adequate climate finance into the country, highlighting the necessity for robust regulatory frameworks and their effective implementation.

He underscored the challenges ahead in achieving net-zero emissions but expressed optimism in the collective efforts of stakeholders to drive successful implementation of the LT-LEDS.

Acknowledging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership in reducing Nigeria’s carbon footprint through initiatives like the Electric Buses Rollout Programme and the Carbon Market Activation Programme, Dr. Dahiru commended the present administration for providing crucial support in implementing enabling policies and frameworks.

Furthermore, he referenced Nigeria’s Climate Change Act passed in November 2021, which aims to achieve low greenhouse gas emissions and sustainable growth.

The Act established the National Council on Climate Change to coordinate and harmonize national climate actions, reflecting the country’s commitment to addressing climate challenges.

As Nigeria forges ahead on its path towards a low-emission future, the engagement and commitment of stakeholders are pivotal in driving meaningful progress.

Through collaborative efforts and innovative strategies, Nigeria aims to position itself as a global leader in low-emission development and climate resilience, paving the way for a sustainable and prosperous future for generations to come.
