The Nasarawa State Government has identified building on the waterways and the indiscriminate felling of trees as factors aggravating climate change.
Alhaji Musa Abubakar, the State Commissioner for the Environment, stated this on Wednesday at a three-day training workshop on Climate Change organised by the ministry.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the training was for desk officers from the 13 local government areas of the state.
He said that if people could stop building on the water ways as well as stop cutting down trees indiscriminately, it would help in avoiding flooding in the state.
“We are all aware of the effect of building on the waterways, cutting down of trees indiscriminately as well as poor management of waste among others
“I am calling on the people to avoid building on the waterways, stop cutting down trees indiscriminately and poor management of waste.
”People should change their attitudes in that direction in their interests and for the overall development of the state,” he said.
Also speaking, Alhaji Aliyu Akwai, the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, appreciated the ministry for organising the workshop.
Akwai said that the workshop would go a long way in ensuring a better environment for all, while urging the participants to make good use of what they would learn to better the environment.
