Morocco, Africa’s largest exporter of fertilizer, has announced its plans to ramp up fertilizer production within the next three years.
The State-Owned Company, Office Chérifien des Phosphates (OCP) Group, which is the country’s biggest exporter of fertilizer, aims to produce 200,000 tonnes of ammonia per year by 2026, increasing to one million tonnes by 2027 and three million tonnes by 2032.
Naoufal Mahdar, OCP Group’s Vice-President of Climate Action and Decarbonization, stated that this ambitious plan will enable them to ensure 100 percent use of green ammonia in their products.
“OCP walks the talk for African climate action towards a more sustainable and net-zero world. This demonstrates our commitment to achieving carbon neutrality across all three scopes by 2040, along with using 100 percent clean energy by 2027 and sourcing 100 percent of our consumed water from non-conventional sources.
“This commitment is supported by substantial investments in sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, desalination, wastewater treatment, and the decarbonization of our entire supply and downstream value chain.
“We are proud that OCP’s efforts in climate change mitigation and adaptation are widely recognized by our stakeholders, financial markets, and international organizations,” said Mahdar.
In addition, Mostafa Terrab, OCP Group’s Chairperson and CEO, highlighted that clean energy is at the heart of OCP’s US$13 billion Green Investment Program.
He noted that the Group will produce the green hydrogen and green ammonia needed to decarbonize its fertilizer products by 2040 through wind, solar, and the processing of heat recovery sources.
