World Environment Day: Nigeria confronts plastic crisis, as waste chokes cities
By Rasheeda Hamidu
The Federal Ministry of Environment on Wednesday opened the National Plastic Summit in Abuja to mobilise stakeholders against plastic pollution through policy reforms, recycling initiatives and sustainable waste management strategies.
The summit was organised by the Federal Ministry of Environment as part of Nigeria’s broader response to rising plastic waste and environmental degradation, according to an official statement published by the Voice of Nigeria.
Minister of Environment Balarabe Abbas Lawal said Nigeria must adopt collective and practical measures to reduce plastic pollution and promote environmental sustainability across communities and industries.
NatureNews notes that Nigeria generates millions of tonnes of plastic waste annually, with blocked drainage systems and polluted waterways worsening flooding and public health risks in many urban centres.
According to the Federal Ministry of Environment, the government is implementing the National Policy on Plastic Waste Management to support recycling, reduce single-use plastics and strengthen circular economy initiatives nationwide.
The ministry reported that the summit brought together government officials, environmental experts, private sector operators and development partners to discuss coordinated solutions to plastic pollution and waste recovery.
Lawal stated that “the fight against plastic pollution requires deliberate action from government, industries, civil society and citizens to protect ecosystems and secure a healthier environment for future generations”.
According to the ministry, discussions at the summit focused on sustainable alternatives to plastics, investment in recycling infrastructure and public awareness campaigns aimed at reducing indiscriminate waste disposal.
The Federal Ministry of Environment explained that Nigeria’s environmental sustainability agenda aligns with international commitments on climate action, pollution reduction and biodiversity protection.
