Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde in Ibadan inaugurated a multi-stakeholder climate change council to coordinate environmental governance and strengthen climate resilience efforts across the state through cross-sector collaboration.
The inauguration, according to the Oyo State Government, took place in Ibadan on Monday during an official ceremony where the state outlined its renewed climate governance framework aimed at improving coordination among ministries, agencies, private sector actors and development partners.
Governor Seyi Makinde, who presided over the inauguration said the council would serve as a central platform for driving Oyo State’s climate response and ensuring that environmental policies are effectively implemented across sectors.
NatureNews notes that subnational climate councils in Nigeria are increasingly being used to integrate climate adaptation into urban planning, agriculture and infrastructure development as climate risks intensify.
According to the Oyo State Government, the council is expected to harmonise climate-related policies, improve environmental data coordination and support implementation of sustainable development priorities in the state.
The state government explained that the initiative would also strengthen partnerships with civil society organisations, development agencies and technical experts to expand climate action at community level.
Governor Makinde further stated that the council reflects Oyo State’s commitment to long-term environmental planning and sustainable development, adding that climate change demands coordinated institutional response.
The government said the council would focus on strengthening early warning systems, environmental education and policy alignment across sectors vulnerable to climate impacts.
