In order to protect the environment, the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) has renewed its unshakable commitment to environmental enforcement, particularly on recalcitrant polluters.
Mr. Kayode Bello, the director of enforcement for the organisation, revealed this to top management at an Ikeja meeting recently.
According to him, the agency understands that preserving the environment is not only morally required but also urgently necessary for the welfare of the present and future generations, particularly during the winter months, which are known to be associated with socioeconomic and religious activities and their detrimental effects on both the environment and people.
“Our dedication to upholding environmental regulations is unwavering. We shall do everything in our power to ensure that those who harm our environment for personal gain are held accountable.
“We firmly believe that robust enforcement of environmental regulations and laws is a critical step towards addressing pressing environmental issues, to serve as a deterrent to others, and further protect the right of innocent residents to a more conducive and friendlier environment,” he continued.
He stated that the vision of the commissioner for the environment, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, focused towards creating a healthier environment and a better quality of life for the good people of Lagos regardless of their social position, is in line with this reinvigorated commitment to environmental sustainability.
Additionally, he stated that he was eager to work with other government organisations, regional communities, and environmental stakeholders to strengthen our efforts as a society to save the world.
Bello pledged that the agency would launch an aggressive advocacy campaign to inform the public of the value of environmental protection and the negative effects of environmental violations, conduct in-depth investigations into all reports of environmental violations, and handle the situation in a manner consistent with international best practises.
