Lagos to commission food logistics hub
By Abdullahi Lukman
The Lagos State Government says it will commission the first phase of the Lagos Central Food Systems and Logistics Hub this year as part of efforts to strengthen food security, reduce supply disruptions and stabilise food prices across the state.
Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Abisola Olusanya, disclosed this during the 2026 Ministerial Press Briefing held in Alausa, Ikeja.
Olusanya said the facility, located in Ketu-Ereyun, Epe, is designed as a modern technology-driven hub to improve food transportation, storage, processing and distribution within Lagos.
According to her, the project is expected to become the largest food logistics hub in Sub-Saharan Africa, with the capacity to accommodate over 1,500 trucks daily and process more than 1.5 million metric tonnes of food annually.
She explained that the hub will include cold and dry storage facilities, warehouses, processing and repackaging centres, aggregation points, truck parks, quality control laboratories and digital trading platforms aimed at improving efficiency within the food value chain.
Olusanya noted that Lagos, which remains Nigeria’s largest food market, continues to face challenges linked to supply chain disruptions, rising transportation costs, inadequate storage infrastructure and post-harvest losses due to heavy dependence on food supplies from other states.
She said the project would improve food aggregation, reduce waste, lower logistics costs and support stable food prices across the state.
The commissioner added that the hub is also expected to create employment opportunities in transportation, warehousing, cold-chain management, food processing, packaging, retail, food safety and technology services.
She further revealed that the state government has activated a ₦500 billion Offtake Guarantee Fund under its Produce for Lagos initiative to strengthen food production, financing, aggregation, logistics and distribution systems.
According to Olusanya, the fund is intended to de-risk agricultural investments and provide guaranteed market access for farmers, processors, aggregators, logistics operators and investors.
She said the initiative is aimed at building confidence among stakeholders while supporting long-term food security and infrastructure development in Lagos State.
