Bauchi foundation launches 11 farmers’ hubs to boost rural livelihoods

The Foundation for Sustainable Smallholder Solutions (FSSS) has established 11 farmers’ hubs across Bauchi North Senatorial District to strengthen agricultural productivity, improve rural incomes and support smallholder farmers with better access to agricultural services.

The initiative, reported by The Guardian Nigeria, is being implemented with support from the Heineken Africa Foundation under the Empowerment of Smallholders to Thrive and Build Climate Resilience through Regenerative Agriculture (ESTRRA) project.

The farmers’ hubs are designed as community-based centres where farmers can access improved seeds, training on modern farming techniques, advisory services and shared facilities to improve production and post-harvest handling.

Project organisers said the intervention is aimed at boosting food production, reducing post-harvest losses and improving market access for rural farmers by linking them to wider agricultural value chains.

The programme also targets women and young people, providing them with skills development opportunities and pathways into agribusiness to improve household incomes.

Stakeholders said the hubs will also promote regenerative and climate-smart agriculture practices to help farmers adapt to environmental and weather-related challenges.

They added that strengthening local agricultural systems is critical to improving food security, reducing unemployment and addressing poverty in rural communities across Bauchi State.
