In a move to protect public health and curb environmental degradation, the Lagos State government has sealed Viva Bella Court II, a residential estate in Lekki Peninsula, Eti-Osa, over the illegal discharge of untreated wastewater into public drains and the surrounding environment.
The enforcement action, carried out by the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) on Saturday, followed persistent complaints about severe foul odours emanating from the estate.
According to Tokunbo Wahab, Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Viva Bella Court II was found to have installed pipes channeling raw sewage directly into the drains, while also allowing overfilled septic tanks to spill waste onto the streets.
Wahab, who announced the development via his official X account on Sunday, condemned the estate’s negligence, stating that improper wastewater management poses a serious risk to public health.
“Deliberate discharge of untreated waste will not be tolerated. We are committed to safeguarding the health and environment of Lagos residents,” Wahab stated.
He further warned that the state government would intensify enforcement to ensure compliance with environmental regulations, urging residents and property developers to maintain proper sanitation standards.
This action signals a broader clampdown by Lagos authorities on environmental violations as the state grapples with rapid urbanization and the challenges of ensuring sustainable waste management.
