In a significant move toward sustainability and energy efficiency, Lagos State has partnered with a Chinese company to provide solar power to its major educational institutions.
This recent initiative, part of a broader collaboration between the two nations, was announced during Beijing’s Africa-China Cooperation Summit (#FOCAC2024).
The agreement, cemented through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), aims to generate 50 megawatts (MW) of clean solar energy for the Lagos State University of Science and Technology, Lagos State University of Education, and the Lagos State College of Medicine.
The solar project is expected to drastically reduce these institutions’ reliance on grid electricity and fossil fuels, which have historically been unstable and costly. With this shift, the universities will not only cut down on their energy expenses but also minimise the environmental impact of their operations. By transitioning to solar power, they will contribute to Lagos State’s efforts to combat climate change and support global sustainability targets.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who signed the MoU on behalf of Lagos State, emphasised the importance of this partnership in advancing the state’s renewable energy agenda. He noted that Lagos is striving to become a leader in green energy adoption in Nigeria, and this project reflects a long-term commitment to sustainable development. “This is not just an energy project,” Sanwo-Olu stated, “it is an investment in our future. Clean energy is essential for our state’s economic and social advancement.”
The collaboration comes as Lagos’s energy demands are on the rise, driven by population growth and expanding industries. By harnessing solar power, the state hopes to alleviate some of the pressure on the national grid, which has been plagued by shortages and inefficiencies. Being abundant and renewable, solar energy presents a viable solution to the state’s energy challenges.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who was present at the signing ceremony, praised the initiative as a model for other states in Nigeria. He noted that the partnership with China addresses immediate energy needs and fosters technology transfer and capacity building.
“This is more than just about energy; it’s about Nigeria learning from global leaders in renewable energy and bringing that knowledge home,”Tinubu remarked. He also pointed out that the project aligns with the national government’s goal of increasing Nigeria’s renewable energy capacity to 30% by 2030.
The 50 MW solar project is expected to begin installation in the coming months, with completion targeted for late 2025. The project will involve setting up solar panels, energy storage systems, and grid integration technologies at the universities. In addition to providing clean electricity, the initiative will create jobs during both the construction and operational phases, contributing to local economic growth.
Experts have praised the project, noting that solar power will provide a more reliable and consistent energy source for the institutions, which have previously suffered from frequent power outages. By stabilizing electricity supply, the universities will be better equipped to conduct research, improve learning conditions, and maintain essential services such as laboratories, libraries, and IT systems.
The MoU also opens the door for future renewable energy projects in Lagos. Governor Sanwo-Olu hinted at the possibility of expanding solar installations to more public institutions, including hospitals and government buildings, further reducing the state’s carbon footprint and paving the way for a more energy secure future.
As Lagos embarks on this journey toward renewable energy, the partnership with China serves as atestament to the state’s ambition to modernize its energy infrastructure. With this solar project, Lagos is not only addressing immediate power needs but also setting the stage for a greener, more sustainable future for Nigeria’s most populous city.
