The Kano State Government has issued a stern warning to its residents, cautioning against the indiscriminate dumping of refuse in waterways within the Sabon Gari area of Fagge Local Government.
Expressing profound concern, Alhaji Nasiru Garo, the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, conveyed his displeasure over the prevailing attitude of residents in the Sabon Gari vicinity who engage in such detrimental practices.
Alhaji Nasiru Garo underscored the potential grave consequences of such actions, emphasizing that such indiscriminate dumping of refuse could lead to severe environmental pollution.
He further highlighted the associated health hazards and the adverse impact on the delicate balance of climate change.
This stance is encapsulated within a statement released by Samaila Gwammaja, the Director of Public Enlightenment in the Ministry of Environment, based in Kano, the state capital. The statement was issued on Tuesday.
Alhaji Nasiru Garo reiterated his concern specifically regarding the Sabon Gari area, pointing out the risk it poses in terms of environmental degradation and contamination.
He urged residents to recognize their role in this scenario and encouraged them to collaborate with the government’s efforts to maintain cleanliness and sanitation.
In light of the impending rainy season, Alhaji Nasiru Garo stressed the importance of maintaining unobstructed drainage systems and waterways.
He implored residents to take responsibility for regular sanitation practices, ensuring that drains are clear to facilitate the smooth flow of water.
By doing so, he emphasized, the occurrence of stagnant water and its associated problems, such as mosquito breeding and inaccessible roads, can be prevented.
Alhaji Nasiru Garo affirmed the Kano State Government’s unwavering commitment to enhance the quality of life for all citizens, irrespective of tribal or religious affiliations.
He urged residents to act responsibly by abstaining from polluting the environment with waste, fecal matter, or other obstructions that could hinder the flow of water systems, thereby averting potential issues.
Moreover, a delegation led by Mrs. Scholastica Umejesi visited the Commissioner’s Office to congratulate him on his appointment and to bring to his attention various pressing environmental concerns within the area. The purpose of the visit was to seek prompt government intervention in addressing these issues.
The Kano State Government’s directive to curtail the careless disposal of refuse underscores the crucial role that every resident plays in maintaining a healthy and sustainable environment.
The appeal reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring a cleaner, safer, and more livable atmosphere for the people of Kano, demonstrating the significance of collaborative efforts in environmental preservation.
