In a decisive move to avert a looming flood crisis in Jigawa State, the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has announced comprehensive measures to address the anticipated deluge during the 2025 rainy season.
The proactive stance comes as the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) had, on April 10, 2025, issued a stark warning of heavy flooding across various states, including Jigawa, between April and November.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting on flood forecasting in Dutse on Wednesday, SEMA Executive Secretary Hannafi Yakubu detailed the state government’s multi-pronged approach.
He confirmed that relief materials have been stockpiled to assist communities that may be affected.
Jigawa’s geographical location near the Hadejia Jama’are River Basin and its sloping terrains make it particularly susceptible to annual flooding.
Recognizing this persistent threat, Yakubu underscored the vital role of public participation in prevention efforts, urging residents across all 27 local government areas to actively construct drainage ditches and culverts, and to strictly refrain from dumping waste in waterways.
“The state government’s efforts to address the flood threat are expected to minimize the impact of flooding on communities and prevent loss of life and property. The public’s cooperation is crucial in this endeavor,” Yakubu stated, emphasizing the collective responsibility.
He further advised against erecting structures on waterways, which he noted can exacerbate flooding.
Abdullahi Usman, a representative from NiMet, reinforced Yakubu’s message at the meeting, stressing the paramount importance of maintaining clear drains and culverts.
“The public’s role in preventing flooding cannot be overemphasised. By taking simple steps such as keeping drains and culverts clear, residents can significantly reduce the risk of flooding in their communities,” Usman affirmed.
Yakubu also assured the public of SEMA’s tireless work in ensuring preparedness for any flood-related emergency, urging residents to report any incidents of flooding or blocked waterways to the agency using their readily available hotlines.
The meeting, which brought together various government agencies, community leaders, and other stakeholders, provided a crucial platform for collaborative discussions on mitigating and preventing flooding in Jigawa State during the current rainy season.
