By Abbas Nazil

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has officially appointed Ivorian businessman and statesman Jean-Louis Billon as a Patron of Nature, marking the first time West Africa is represented in this prestigious role.

IUCN Director General Dr. Grethel Aguilar formally welcomed Billon, emphasizing that his background across public service and agribusiness brings a unique perspective on balancing economic growth with nature conservation across Africa and globally.

Billon currently serves as the Chairman of SIFCA, a prominent agribusiness conglomerate in Côte d’Ivoire that has led extensive environmental conservation initiatives under his leadership.

Through SIFCA’s sustainability programs, Billon has overseen the preservation of more than 4,650 hectares of forests, the protection of 8,400 hectares of classified forests, annual reforestation projects covering hundreds of hectares, and the protection of nearly 60,000 sea turtles.

In addition to his private sector achievements, Billon has held prominent public offices in Côte d’Ivoire, including Mayor of Dabakala, President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Minister of Trade, and Member of Parliament.

Throughout his public and corporate career, Billon has advocated for inclusive economic development through local agricultural value creation, entrepreneurship, and sustainable multi-stakeholder partnerships.

Expressing his gratitude for the designation, Billon stated that Africa’s long-term prosperity relies on viewing nature not merely as an asset to safeguard, but as a central catalyst for sustainable economic growth.

Established by the IUCN in 2010, the Patrons of Nature initiative gathers influential global leaders to offer strategic direction, mobilize funding for flagship conservation programs, and champion biodiversity protection on an international scale.

Billon’s appointment ensures a distinct West African representation on this global stage, supporting locally driven, community-centered environmental efforts that advance ecological protection alongside regional economic health.
