India secures major green loan for renewable energy expansion

India’s Power Grid Corporation has obtained a major green financing package to support the expansion of renewable energy infrastructure, marking a significant boost to the country’s efforts to strengthen clean electricity transmission and accelerate its energy transition goals.
The financing, valued at 80 billion Japanese yen, was provided by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation to support the development of the Khavda-Nagpur high-voltage direct current transmission project, a key infrastructure corridor designed to transport renewable energy across long distances.
The agreement, signed in June 2026, is aimed at improving India’s ability to integrate large-scale solar and wind power into the national grid by strengthening transmission capacity between energy generation hubs and high-demand regions.
Officials said the project is central to India’s strategy for scaling up renewable energy deployment while ensuring grid stability, reliability and efficient power distribution across the country.
The transmission utility responsible for the project operates one of the largest electricity networks in the world, managing extensive high-voltage transmission lines and substations that connect power producers with consumers nationwide.
The new financing is expected to accelerate construction of critical infrastructure needed to support India’s growing renewable energy capacity and reduce dependence on fossil fuel-based electricity generation.
Energy planners emphasized that efficient transmission systems are essential for maximizing the benefits of renewable energy, particularly as India expands solar and wind installations in resource-rich states.
The partnership also reflects increasing international confidence in India’s clean energy transition, with global financial institutions playing a growing role in funding sustainable infrastructure projects.

The transmission company has adopted long-term sustainability targets, including achieving net-zero emissions by 2047, eliminating waste sent to landfills by 2030 and becoming net water positive within the same timeframe.
The Japanese development financial institution involved in the deal is a government-backed entity that supports international infrastructure and development projects aligned with sustainable growth objectives.
The Khavda-Nagpur transmission line is considered a strategic component of India’s renewable energy roadmap, designed to transport clean electricity from high-generation zones to major consumption centres, including industrial corridors and urban areas.
Experts note that India’s renewable energy expansion depends not only on generation capacity but also on the ability to efficiently transmit power across regions, making such projects critical to achieving national energy targets.
