In a move to foster national engagement and sustainable development in Nigeria’s maritime sector, the International Maritime Institute of Nigeria (IMION), a research and training arm of the Nigerian Navy, has unveiled a specialized executive training course for journalists focusing on the Blue Economy.
The course, scheduled to take place later this month, will bring together prominent maritime journalists and media executives from across the country.
According to a statement from IMION, the program is designed to strengthen the capacity of media professionals in reporting, advocacy, and policy engagement concerning Nigeria’s maritime and coastal resources.
The initiative underscores the strategic role of the media in shaping public understanding and driving discourse around the Blue Economy.
It also emphasizes the media’s power to influence policy formulation and promote sustainable practices in maritime development.
The statement highlighted that the course will feature high-impact sessions delivered by eminent subject-matter experts in the maritime industry.
These sessions are expected to provide participants with advanced knowledge, practical tools, and strategic insights to support accurate, in-depth, and impactful coverage of maritime issues.
IMION noted that it has extended a formal invitation to the Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria (MARAN), recognizing the association as a leading voice in maritime journalism and a critical partner in the nation’s maritime future.
By engaging experienced media professionals through this capacity-building initiative, the institute aims to create a bridge between industry stakeholders and the press, facilitating a more informed public and strengthening policy advocacy efforts.
The course also intends to enhance collaborative efforts between the media and maritime industry players to support the sustainable utilization of Nigeria’s vast coastal and ocean resources.
According to IMION, the program will contribute to building a knowledgeable media corps capable of promoting awareness, transparency, and accountability in the management of Blue Economy resources.
It is also expected to catalyze more inclusive development strategies aligned with Nigeria’s broader economic goals.
