The HEDA Resource Centre, in collaboration with the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, will hold a nationwide dissemination and sensitisation programme on the 2026 Annual Flood Outlook to improve public understanding of flood risks and strengthen preparedness across vulnerable communities.
The two-day virtual programme, scheduled for May 19 and 20, will bring together farmers, agricultural cooperatives, community leaders, media professionals, civil society groups, researchers, humanitarian workers, and officials from relevant ministries and emergency agencies across the six geopolitical zones.
According to HEDA, the initiative aims to simplify flood forecast information and make it more accessible to communities affected by recurring floods and climate-related disasters.
HEDA Executive Secretary, Sulaimon Arigbabu, said many communities still struggle to access or understand annual flood predictions despite recurring disasters.
“Every year, flood predictions are released, but many communities still do not receive the information in ways they can understand or act upon,” he said.
The organisation said the programme would focus on interpretation of the 2026 Annual Flood Outlook, flood-risk communication, early warning dissemination, protection of farmlands and livelihoods, and community preparedness measures.
Sessions will be conducted in English, Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, and Pidgin to widen participation across the country.
