Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has launched a major emergency water intervention initiative with the approval of 166 solar-powered boreholes across water-stressed communities in Kano State.
The Acting Commissioner for Water Resources, Dr. Dahiru Muhammad Hashim, disclosed the development on Tuesday, saying the initiative is part of the administration’s efforts to ease water scarcity and improve access to clean and reliable water supply for residents.
According to him, the project is expected to provide about 4.15 million litres of water daily, benefiting an estimated 830,000 people across affected communities in the state.
Dr. Hashim explained that each of the 166 solar-powered boreholes is designed to produce approximately 25,000 litres of water per day and serve about 5,000 residents.
He described the intervention as a reflection of Governor Yusuf’s commitment to addressing water supply challenges through practical and sustainable solutions.
“The administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf remains determined to provide practical and sustainable solutions to the water needs of the people.
This initiative is another major step toward improving access to potable water and strengthening public infrastructure across Kano State,” he said.
The commissioner noted that the current rollout represents the first phase of the initiative, adding that additional boreholes would be approved for more communities in the coming months.
He further stated that the project forms part of the government’s broader emergency response measures aimed at reducing the impact of water shortages while long-term rehabilitation and expansion efforts continue across the sector.
Dr. Hashim also recalled that rehabilitation works have commenced at the Tamburawa and Challawa Water Treatment Plants following the governor’s approval and award of contracts for the projects.
According to him, the ongoing rehabilitation is
expected to significantly improve water production and distribution across Kano metropolis and surrounding communities.
He added that the state government is pursuing a comprehensive strategy to revitalise the water sector through infrastructure upgrades, expansion of supply systems, and alternative energy-powered solutions to ensure sustainability and efficiency.
The Kano State Government also urged residents to protect public water facilities and promote responsible water usage to support ongoing interventions across the state.
