FG,FAO target youth-led agriculture to tackle unemployment, boost food security

The Federal Government and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) are deepening collaboration to position agriculture as a major pathway for youth employment and improved food security in Nigeria.

The renewed partnership focuses on creating opportunities for young Nigerians through skills development, agribusiness support and increased participation in modern agricultural value chains, according to officials at a recent meeting in Abuja.

Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, Dr Maryam Keshinro, said the initiative aligns with government efforts to channel the country’s growing youth population into productive sectors capable of driving economic growth.

She noted that with nearly 70 per cent of Nigeria’s population made up of young people, investing in youth-focused agricultural programmes could help address unemployment while strengthening local food production.

FAO officials reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to supporting Nigeria with technical expertise and programmes designed to help young people build sustainable livelihoods through agriculture.

Stakeholders say stronger youth engagement in farming and agribusiness is increasingly critical as Nigeria faces rising food demand, climate pressures and the need for more resilient food systems.

The collaboration is expected to support policies and programmes that encourage innovation, entrepreneurship and wider youth participation across the agricultural sector.
