In a proactive move aimed at revitalizing both the economy of Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria as a whole, Governor Pastor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State sought the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in rejuvenating a 28-year-old dormant oil palm project and the Ibom Deep Seaport within the state.
Governor Eno disclosed this pivotal discussion during a courtesy visit to the President at the Presidential Villa on Wednesday, underscoring the potential impact on the state and national economy.
With a vision to establish a fully functional value chain for the oil palm industry and position the country as an exporter of palm oil, Governor Eno emphasized the need for federal support in the ambitious endeavor.
He elaborated on the strategic significance of the Ibom Deep Seaport, highlighting its deep wharf capable of accommodating ships and catering to the business interests of the southeast, south-south, and the entire Niger Delta region.
“The purpose of my visit to the President is to wish him a Happy New Year and also make a request. You know when governors come to see the President, this is the seat of government, you have one or two things to talk about,” Governor Eno stated.
Expressing optimism about the oil palm project’s revival, he said, “We’ve talked and requested him to support us with our Ibom Deep Seaport and agricultural program on the oil palm. Akwa Ibom is an oil palm zone. And we have started the process of revamping the moribund industry that has laid there for 28 years.”
Governor Eno stressed the importance of federal assistance to establish a complete value chain, create employment opportunities, and contribute to Nigeria’s self-sufficiency in palm oil production.
In response to the governor’s request, President Tinubu graciously granted permission to present a formal memo detailing the requirements, including considerations for Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO).
Governor Eno emphasized the need for the Ibom Deep Seaport, citing the congestion at existing ports, particularly in Lagos.
He outlined the unique advantages of the Ibom Deep Seaport, reiterating its deep wharf capable of handling ships and catering to the maritime needs of the southern regions.
Governor Eno affirmed the potential positive impact of these initiatives, not only on Akwa Ibom but on the nation’s economy as a whole.
