The German Development Agency (GIZ) has unveiled a new high-tech handheld device designed to improve waste sorting efficiency in Lagos State.
The launch event, held on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, also featured the signing of a strategic partnership with the Waste Pickers Association of Nigeria (WAPAN).
Developed in collaboration with German tech firm trinamiX and BASF West Africa, the device uses advanced sensing technology to accurately identify and sort various waste materials including plastics, textiles, polyurethane mattresses, carpets, and photovoltaic modules.
It has already undergone testing in Kano during a pilot phase.
Markus Wauschkuhn, GIZ’s representative, said the initiative addresses a critical gap in Nigeria’s waste management sector, which generates about 32 million tonnes of solid waste annually.
“Informal waste pickers are key to recovering recyclable materials but often lack the tools, training, and support to maximize their contributions,” he noted.
The project is part of GIZ’s *Sustainable and Inclusive Economic Development for Decent Employment in Nigeria* programme.
It aims to empower waste collectors—particularly women and youth—by improving their productivity, income, and working conditions. The initiative plans to expand to all 774 Local Government Areas across Nigeria.
Wauschkuhn emphasized that the devices are expected to transform the waste value chain by producing cleaner, better-sorted recyclables, leading to higher earnings for collectors and a more sustainable waste system.
WAPAN Executive from Kano, Mr. Aliyu Auwal, praised the device’s impact, stating it has already proven effective in differentiating plastics and other materials.
“This is a device that I know will revolutionize waste collection in Nigeria,” he said.
As part of the agreement, WAPAN members will receive training on using the devices and maximizing income opportunities.
Other dignitaries at the event included Susanna Loecher from trinamiX, Dochen Schindelarz from the German Consulate in Nigeria, and Jean Marc, a director at BASF.
