Ginger blight resurfaces as Nigeria moves to revive $713m industry

Ginger blight, a destructive fungal disease that devastated ginger farms in 2023, has resurfaced in parts of Nigeria, threatening efforts to rebuild the country’s ginger industry and restore its export potential.

BusinessDay reported on Tuesday, that the disease had returned as farmers and industry stakeholders work to revive a sector previously estimated to be worth about $713 million.

The resurgence is raising concerns among farmers and processors who are already dealing with production challenges, including rising input costs and the need to restore confidence in ginger farming.

The 2023 outbreak caused significant losses in major ginger-producing areas, particularly in Kaduna State, where farmers reported widespread destruction of their crops.

Ginger blight is caused by fungal pathogens that attack ginger plants, causing symptoms such as yellowing and wilting before the plants eventually die.

The disease poses a particular challenge because infected planting materials and movement of contaminated soil and farm equipment can contribute to its spread.

Efforts to rebuild the industry have therefore placed greater emphasis on disease-resistant planting materials, improved farming practices, surveillance and stronger extension services.

The renewed outbreak could also affect Nigeria’s ambitions to increase ginger production and regain its position in international markets, where Nigerian ginger is valued for its quality and distinctive characteristics.

For farmers, another widespread outbreak could mean reduced yields, higher production costs and further losses at a time when the sector is trying to recover from the earlier devastation.

NatureNews reports that controlling ginger blight will be important not only for protecting farmers’ livelihoods but also for strengthening Nigeria’s agricultural resilience and food and export security.
