Flood threat: Nasarawa to enforce relocation from high-risk communities
By Awyetu Asabe Hope
The Nasarawa State Government has announced plans to enforce the relocation of residents from flood-prone communities as the 2026 rainy season begins, in a bid to prevent loss of lives and property.
The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Princess Margaret Elayo, disclosed this on Saturday in Lafia after the April sanitation exercise, noting that high-risk areas have been identified across Doma, Nasarawa, Toto, Awe, and Lafia local government areas.
She said the decision followed forecasts by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency and recurring incidents of flooding linked to the River Benue and its tributaries.
According to Elayo, the government is working with local government chairmen and traditional rulers to guide affected residents to safer locations, urging them to temporarily vacate their homes with their valuables.
She also warned against dumping refuse in drains and constructing buildings on waterways, stressing that such practices worsen flooding.
The commissioner added that awareness campaigns are being intensified through community leaders and the media to educate residents on flood risks and prevention.
Meanwhile, the ministry said 106 persons were arrested and prosecuted during the April sanitation exercise for violating environmental laws, including engaging in business activities during restricted hours.
