Mining company installs solar-powered water boreholes in Kaduna communities

African Natural Resources and Mines Limited has provided solar-powered boreholes to host communities in Gujeni, Kagarko Local Government Area, to improve access to clean water.
The intervention includes four boreholes installed in Gujeni and Chakwama communities, where residents have long struggled with inadequate and unsafe water sources.
The development follows earlier reports that existing boreholes in the area were vandalised, forcing residents to rely on contaminated streams.
Some neighbouring settlements, including Marabaun Babu, had also complained of being excluded from the company’s community support despite experiencing the impact of its operations.
Speaking at the commissioning, John Ndanufa Akanya said the project was based on consultations with the affected communities to identify urgent needs, noting that access to water was prioritised over other requests.
Community leaders, however, said demand for water remains high due to population pressure, particularly in nearby settlements with a large number of workers.
They called for additional boreholes to ease congestion and improve access.
Residents noted that while the new facilities have improved water supply, more infrastructure is needed to meet growing demand.
