A Nigerian clean energy company, Green Charging Solutions, has announced plans to invest in electric vehicle charging infrastructure to reduce the country’s reliance on petrol and diesel.
The company’s founder, Tobi Angel, disclosed this in Abuja, stating that the initiative is designed to promote a cleaner and more affordable transportation system powered by electricity.
He explained that electric vehicles present a viable alternative to fossil fuel-powered transportation, especially when supported by renewable and grid-based electricity sources.
According to him, the rollout of EV charging stations across major cities and transport corridors will help create an enabling ecosystem for electric mobility.
Angel noted that transportation accounts for a significant portion of Nigeria’s fuel consumption, making the sector a critical target for energy transition efforts.
He added that widespread adoption of electric vehicles would gradually reduce demand for petrol and diesel while helping to stabilise transportation costs.
The initiative, he said, would also benefit businesses by lowering logistics expenses as energy costs become more predictable over time.
An energy expert who commented on the development said the move could protect Nigeria’s economy from global oil price volatility often triggered by geopolitical tensions.
The expert explained that countries with diversified energy sources are better positioned to withstand international crises that disrupt oil supply chains.
He further noted that increased reliance on domestically generated electricity, including solar power, would ease pressure on imported refined petroleum products.
Angel highlighted Nigeria’s abundant sunshine and expanding electricity capacity as strong advantages for the transition to electric mobility.
He stressed that these natural and infrastructural factors make the country well-suited for the adoption of electric vehicles.
Beyond reducing fuel dependence, the project is expected to deliver environmental benefits such as lower carbon emissions and improved air quality.
It is also projected to create new economic opportunities, including the generation of green jobs and the stimulation of innovation within the energy sector.
Angel described electric mobility in Nigeria as still at an early stage but emphasised the urgency of coordinated efforts to accelerate progress.
He called for collaboration among government agencies, private investors, and other stakeholders to develop charging networks, incentives, and supportive policies.
He maintained that Green Charging Solutions aims to position itself as a key player in driving Nigeria’s transition to sustainable transportation.
An Abuja-based electric vehicle user, Benjamin Ayodele, described the investment as timely in light of rising fuel prices linked to global conflicts.
He said electric mobility is no longer just an environmental consideration but an economic necessity in a world where oil supply disruptions can make fuel unaffordable for many citizens.
